Our dear brother in Christ, Fred 'Bud' Bayley, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday December 20, 2008.

He was 87 years 'young'
.

Bud was a dear friend of the ministry and was awarded the Andy Andersen Award as the 'Friend of Gateway' earlier this decade.

He gave his computer expertise, his time and his money the ministry and his love and friendship to me personally.

A memorial service will take place Tuesday, December 23rd. at 1:00pm at Willow Grove, Lancaster, Pa.

Bud requested that, in lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to:

George Lawther was a dear friend from many years past.

As many of you know, his wife, Anne, was the first to share Christ with me in 1971.

She continued praying and witnessing to me and in 1972 God broke through my stubborn heart. I'm eternally grateful for this.

Please pray for the Lawther family.

Anne
sent this email earlier this evening:

'Dear Friends,

My daughter Lynne received a call from the hospital that George died very peacefully tonight. She called me around 9:30 PM.

I have no information yet regarding arrangements, other than that the funeral will be in Southern Pines, NC.

A song that I've listened to and been blessed by today is "No More Night" sung by David Phelps.

The chorus says, "No more night, no more pain, no more tears, never crying again and praises to the Great I Am. We will live in the light of the Risen Lamb." Praise God for that blessed assurance.'

George knew the Lord. He came to Christ a month or so after I did in 1972. His family had been with him during this difficult time and many have covered them in prayer.

Online obit from the Pilot:
http://www.thepilot.com/stories/20081217/news/obits/20081217obLawther.html

Please continue to pray for them as they mourn and as they rejoice, knowing George is safely Home.

As you may have opportunity to share with the family, know that His love and comfort come through His Word. Here are some Scriptures to be considered:

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him. (Nahum 1:7)

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. (Psalm 55:22)

May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your [Word] is my delight. (Psalm 119:76-77)

Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains!

For the LORD comforts His people and will have compassion on His
afflicted ones. (Isaiah 49:13)

The Lawthers in 1979

I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy
instead of sorrow. (Jeremiah 31:13)

As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. (James 5:11)

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. (Psalm 18:16-18)

2004 at Anne's birthday party

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.
(1 Peter 5:7)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)
2006
The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. (Psalm 145:8-9)

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain... (Revelation 21:4)

2008

But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love... (Nehemiah 9:17)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)

Be still and know that I am God... (Psalm 46:10)

One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that You, O God, are strong, and that You, O Lord, are loving... (Psalm 62:11-12)

I, even I, am He who comforts you... (Isaiah 51:12)

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. (Psalm 103:8)

Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for His promises never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry. (Psalm 34:15)

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us... (2 Corinthians 7:6)

Though [your mother] may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16)

Praise be to the LORD, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. (Psalm 68:19)

"Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." (Psalm 91:14-15)

The LORD is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made. The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. (Psalm 145:13-14)

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1)

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies (Psalm 36:5).

But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness (Psalm 86:15).

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever (Psalm 136:26).

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness" (Jeremiah 31:3).

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing" (Zephaniah 3:17).

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35-39).

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
Now remain in my love (John 15:9).

O our God, the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love... (Nehemiah 9:32)

Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the LORD comforts His people and will have compassion on His afflicted ones. (Isaiah 49:13)

December 11, 2008 (3:09pm)

Dad's kidneys are beginning to shut down. His condition keeps worsening. We have told the doctor again, whatever you do, keep him comfortable. Pain meds, air, nutrition, and hydration, at least. Major procedures are out of the question - deadly and useless. I am continuing to sing to him and read Scriptures. He has three visitors coming today.

December 10, 2008

7:11pm: Jane writes:"They can't remove the tube yet. He has fluid build-up issues. They will look for another opportunity to do so."

7:10 - Jane writes:Dad got to have a taste of apple juice tonight, on a sponge. By the intensity in his face, I could tell it did much good.

3:56pm: Jane writes:Since Dad is breathing on his own, the doctors suggested he may be more comfortable with the respiratory tube out of his mouth. They will be reducing his pain meds just a bit, so he will be more alert - maybe able to talk. I told them that was fine, but if he indicated he was in pain, they would have to increase the meds, and if he got in trouble with his breathing, the tube would need to go back in. Otherwise, he is resting easily since the nurses are keeping up with everything. No change in his status or condition.

A visitor from church came at around 1 PM (David Gray), and Pastor Dean Engebretzen and his wife will be coming by this evening for the 5:30 - 6:30 visiting time.

The ICU chaplain stopped by to see me and asked me to tell her about Dad - so I gave her a short bio. She also asked if I had any concerns. We stepped out of the room to talk and I told her that since we have no idea how long Dad will live, and may be in ICU a long time - I would have to go back to VA to my family.

The thing that bothers me the most is the idea that nobody will be there to squeeze his hand and just talk to him about things... things other than "George, we're going to turn you on your side now", or "I'm going to take your temperature."

It is important to me that someone talk to him and show that he's cared for if I can't be here. She assured me that she would do that regularly and tell the volunteers to do so as well, and let him know how the various college football games are going (especially Penn State), pray with him and read Scripture to him.

I also talked with Joe Milazzo (a friend from karaoke) who assured me that his friends would also take turns and come visit a few times a week (the hospital is 1 1/2 hours away from Southern Pines), and talk to him about what's new in their lives.

This is a great comfort to me! I plan (Lord willing) to go back home late this weekend, and return here Dec. 17-20th to visit, then go home and come back after Christmas for a bit, and to take care of Dad's bills again, then my next trip would be after New Year's Day.

If he is still doing well, I will come back as I can, but my job starts up again the second week in January.

Jane - (11:49pm) The doctor says that Dad is now considered terminal. He cannot survive the operation he needs to survive. Lynne and I said we wanted them to keep Dad on nutrition/hydration/oxygen and meds for pain and antibiotics and probiotics... not changing anything they are currently doing. I also asked the nurse to play the CD's for Dad when I'm not there. I'll bring some Selah and Casting Crowns Christmas music in to add to the collection, tomorrow.

The prognosis, even if he had extraordinary measures, would have been bleak too. Just a slower death. Even with a temporary pacemaker (which was suggested to give him a bit longer if his heart "blocked", Dad's organs would still shut down, one by one. If God wants to heal Dad, He will. But if God decides to take God home - and Dad's heart stops beating, we will let him go. This was Dad's wish, and there is no reason to prolong his death when he has heaven waiting.

I had a bit of an emotional meltdown after talking to the doctor - already missing Dad's jokes, laughter, singing - his smile. But we have had good days together. I am grateful for that. Whatever God wants to do, His ways are perfect.

Jane - (10:13am) getting advice that I should make some arrangements now, just in case. So much I don't know and have to find out.

December 8, 2008

(12:28pm) No change with Dad this morning.

Jane Clark writes: 10:47am Dad's doctor called tonight to let me know that Dad is now considered critical. His echo cardiogram showed an abscess on the heart - quite extensive - from the aortic valve to the mitral valve. This is from his bacterial infection, the one they haven't been able to get rid of.

Lynne Marie Jackson writes: Got a call from the doctor, Dad has an extensive abcess on his heart. He is too weak for an operation, but will need one to fix it.

December 7, 2008
Jane Clark writes: It's been a rough day for Dad. He had a fever over 103 this morning and was not responsive when I came in. His blood pressure was falling again, and his cultures were still coming back positive.

December 4, 2008:

(3:50pm) Surgery went well! Dad had an ulcer and it's being treated. So much better than we'd feared. Thank God.

(2:59pm) Dad is having an endoscopy, to find out why there is blood where it doesn't belong. They think/hope it is just an ulceration, something fixable while they're doing the endoscopy. There is blood in his stool, from his stomach tube and his nose tube. They don't know why. His blood count is pretty good. If they need to, based on their findings, they may install another drain (different procedure). The doctor has seemed confident that he will be okay - she knows the whole process that follows a complicated surgery, such as he had, but to us - it seems he is falling apart. We do appreciate your continued prayers.

They are hoping his colon is not compromised by the infection to such an extent that they would need to operate on that too. It's a rough road. I will update as soon as I have more info.

(10:57am) Dad's kidneys are ok. Concern about swelling now in abdomen. Dad is getting a CAT scan. Doc thinks it is more than the infection (C. Dificil).

(10:30am) Dad's condition... as I understand it

Lynne was called to the hospital before visiting hours in ICU. Dad is in pretty serious trouble, but they are not sure why. He has two things he's on antibiotics for. His blood oxygen level is low. Still high temp (103+), heart rate fast but blood pressure low (shock?) kidneys may not be working right. Dad is mumbling - often incoherent. Lynne wanted to talk to him before they put the breathing tube in so she could understand him. I expect to go down again Friday evening or Saturday morning.

December 3, 2008 (7:53pm) His daughter Jane writes at 7:53pm this evening:

'Dad is being moved back into ICU - fever, infection, weakness, heart rate elevated. Please pray!'

To our dear Family, Friends, and Partners of Greater Life,
PLEASE READ to end -- SORRY SAD NEWS...
PLEASE FORWARD TO OTHERS FOR PRAYER AND SUPPORT!

This is one of our most difficult notes to write in 22 years of outreach ministry here in the city of Newark, New Jersey...(after having buried our "Spiritual Daughter", Wytonya Thompson, in the 80's who was brutally murdered)......................

...As most of you know, we have the privilege of serving 60 youth & Mentors at the Essex County Youth Detention Facility (Youth House) with Lisa Weathers, Thursday before Thanksgiving...

...and we fed almost 100 children, teenagers, and family members on the eve of Thanksgiving at our Greater Life Community Outreach Center...it was an awesome and exciting time this year to see them enjoy the service and delicious food by our Board of Directors and friends!!! There was truly a lot of love and thanks "in the air"...and it ended with a delightful time of prayer by children and teens giving, "thanks to God for a safe place to come to, to enjoy myself and feel loved - to be myself", as one young teenager stated.

...this year, we had almost a dozen Alumni Young Adults who couldn't make it due to working late evening to early morning, so we decided to open our Center on Thanksgiving Day to offer them a chance to come out and enjoy a meal together...8 showed up to our surprise and delight!

We started off with a time of prayer reflection (as they prayed for our country, Board of Directors, supporters, friends, family, and Greater Life family), allowing them the opportunity to express what they were thankful for...followed by a delicious meal that Michael and I served up for them...
...there was laughter in the air, followed by hours of wonderful stories, and catching up with them...much of their conversation was with them asking how the younger children and teens were doing....they were very interested in each person's situation, so that they could know how to best serve them when they each volunteered at the Center after school, along with street outreach......amongst them was Duquan Wimberly, whom we lovingly call "Duke", one of our awesome "Spiritual Sons"...

HE SEEMED TO HAVE THE HAPPIEST DAY THAT WE'VE EVER WITNESSED...he laughed and ate until he couldn't eat anymore, remarking how delicious everything was...he even made up a huge plate of food to take home to eat later...
...well, sadly, later never came...after many hours of delightful time at the Center, he made his way home to his own apartment (that we helped him to get in April 2007)...he commented just last week about how much he enjoyed being a bachelor and working hard for his money at the age of 25, only 1 month away from his 26th birthday...

...this is hard to type...............as Michael and my heart are grieving deeply, and my stomach hurts..............because DUKE WAS SHOT IN HIS STOMACH and DIED!... right in front of his apartment building entrance that very night...for NO APPARENT REASON!

...............WE ARE ALL GRIEVING DEEPLY, AND COVET YOUR EXTRA LOVE AND PRAYERS...............

...Duke had the best day of his life, and is now with God, as he made the best decision when he was a teenager...to follow God, and not give in to the negative lure of the streets...

Duke is one of the graduates from our very 1st Leadership Institute in the late 90's, with a final assignment of interviewing a professional -- and he, along with Jamaal, Shawkat, and Masharah, together interviewed the candidate of their choosing -- Andrew Manns, an Attorney who cares about youth!!! (now our Board Chairman)
Duke was the 1st one who came through our doors every day when we were privileged to buy our current building on Chancellor Avenue, in 1997, at the critical age of 13. And after graduating Weequahic High School, became a volunteer!

Duke was the 1st one to take the challenge of becoming an entrepreneur by opening "Dukes Snack Shack" (we helped him to start it so that he could earn a stipend to purchase his own food, for he was always hungry).

Duke worked hard at everything he did! And had a generous and joyous disposition... a giggle and smile that could warm your heart... He didn't let his cleft lip stop him, although because of it, he had a slight shyness as a kid. But as he got older and started growing a mustache, he liked the way it covered it, which gave him more comfort; affording more noticeable confidence.

Duke was the 1st one who accepted our challenge to cut off his dreads last year, in order to appear more professional and gain more respect, and he was promoted to his current job!
....for all of you who remember Duke, we know you will agree that this bold "soldier" will be forever missed! He helped with gang truces at the center, and challenged drug dealers as he himself showed them the "wad" of money that HE EARNED FROM HARD WORK at a LEGITIMATE JOB...that was all his -- as he challenged them that the "wad" of money that they had in their pocket belonged to someone else, while having to work harder than he did!!!

...Duke helped to get a lot of kids off the street and into our Greater Life Community Outreach Center "Safe Haven"...challenging them to Greater Life!
...THAT'S WHY WE ARE GOING TO GO ON and have our Annual FUND RAISING & CELEBRATION DINNER this Saturday, December 6th @ 5pm @ Snuffys Pantagis!

Duke was looking forward to this, as he made it to just about every year's dinner...and would want us to raise funds necessary to KEEP OUR DOORS OPEN to help more kids than ever off the streets and out of crime!

This dinner must go on...
to honor our dear "Kidstitute" child who was shot this summer at the age of 10 & is still recovering from paralysis...
to honor Duquan "Duke" who was murdered Thursday night...
to help SAVE MORE LIVES --
to offer GREATER LIFE to EVERY KID & FAMILY MEMBER!!!

Duke's life was not in vain...he took hold of GREATER LIFE! He didn't waste a moment enjoying Greater Life! He was proud of the rich legacy of Jesus Christ, and feasted upon how he could better his life more day-by-day. Sometimes shy, yet with a quiet strength, Duke wasn't shy about telling others how he was afforded the opportunity to have a safe place to go every day, to stay off the streets and out of trouble.

PLEASE HELP US TO GET AS MANY PEOPLE TO THE TABLES AS POSSIBLE, and for those who can't attend TO SEND THEIR SUPPORT!!! Let's honor this fallen "soldier"; this awesome "warrior"!

Details of his Homegoing service will be forthcoming, as we are working with Pastor Beckham/Clear View Baptist Church (Duke's mother's Pastor & great supporter of Greater Life). Please keep posted via email and tel # 973-923-2264.

Our hearts are heavy, but thanks to many of your calls, cards, notes, meals, and financial blessings in honor of Duke, we are TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED!

May you stand encouraged in light of your losses, concerns, and troubles...may you take hold of Greater Life, more day-by-day...may you experience peace, love, and joy as you allow God to work everything out for you...taking hold of Greater Life! That's what we are attempting to do.

We love and appreciate you reading this, and holding us and our Greater Life "Family", along with Duke's family, up in prayer...
