Dear Gateway friends,

We have a real need for prayer and for physical help.

The aunt of one of the ladies who came to Gateway last night had a traumatic experience on Tuesday.

Her boyfriend (and father of two of her children) was murdered in Newark on June 17th.See the Star Ledger article below.

Lola* (not her real name) is 25. She has a 3 year old and a 7 year old daughter and is 9 weeks pregnant.

Her boyfriend, Marquis, was killed one day before Naomi's 3rd birthday.

Lola is very afraid that those who may have been involved in killing Marquis are after her and her family.

She is staying with a grandmother in Newark (They lived in Irvington).

We've given the kids some toys but they have left the apartment in Irvington with only the clothes on their backs.

Rev. Michael Westbrook (Gateway's Board Chairman) and two staff members from Greater Life in Newark are assisting the family.

What is needed are clothes (preferably new) or financial gifts for us to purchase clothes for the kids.

Newark man is shot

and killed in central

business district

A 30-year-old Newark man was shot to death last night in the city's central business district.

Marquis Green, was found at the intersection suffering "multiple gunshot wounds" at 9:41 p.m., Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Paul Loriquet said.

Green was pronounced dead at the scene, a couple blocks south of the Rutgers-Newark campus.

Authorities have not released any information about the circumstances of the shooting, or if they have identified any suspects.

Amidst a world of fear and anger, self and rebellion, joy and sorrow -you can have

the joy and peace of knowing Christ in a personal way, and being assured of heaven.

First, know that the God who made YOU, loves you very much.

"I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with loving

kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that

whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" John 3:16

God showed His love for us at the Cross: ‘But God demonstrates His own love

toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.’ Romans 5:8

So, everyone is good and seeks after God?

No. That’s why we need to personally

trust Christ to take away our sins and to allow us into heaven.

THE SCRIPTURES SAY: "There is not a single man who is righteous, there is not

one who understands, or who seeks for God. All men have turned away from God,

they have all gone wrong. No one is good, not even one." (Romans 3:10-12)

But can't good works assure me of eternal life? We may give to a charitable cause...

or volunteer at church... These are important and good;

yet they can't get us into heaven...

they are no solution to our problem of sin. They in no way give us

the abundant life Jesus Christ wants us to have. WHY? Because...

WE ARE ALL SINNERS BEFORE GOD: Romans 3:23 tells us

"All men have sinned and are far away from God's saving presence."

THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN IS SPIRITUAL DEATH: "For the wages of sin is

death (spiritual death), but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ

Jesus our Lord." (Rom. 6:23)

WE CANNOT SAVE OURSELVES: "For by grace have you been saved

(from eternal death) through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift

of God,not as a result of works, that no one should boast." (Eph. 2:8-9)

No one can climb his or her way to heaven. None of us are worthy of obtaining

eternal life.

In John 3:3, we read about a very, very religious person named Nicodemus.

Yet, Jesus said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he can not

see the kingdom of God."

Do you know how to be "born again"? By going to a particular church? Being baptized?

Good works? The Golden Rule? Just feeling sorry? NO!

By acknowledging your sin and rebellion to God, trusting in His finished work on the

cross, and asking Him personally to take over the control of your life, you can be

assured that your sins are forgiven.. and that you have eternal life!

The Bible tells us.. "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust,

in order that He might bring us to God..." (I Peter 3:18)

The purpose of Christ's coming to earth was to give us the way to obtain eternal life,

through trust in Him.

"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we say

that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar." (I John 1:8-10) "He that believeth

(trusts) not the Son (as personal Savior) shall not see life; but the wrath of God

abides on him." (John 3:36)

Christ, the Good shepherd, also came "..in order that they (you and I) might have

life, life in all its fullness." (John 10:10)

IF YOU WERE TO DIE TONIGHT, WHERE WOULD

YOU SPEND ETERNITY?

If you are unsure that you have eternal life, pray a prayer similar

to this, and be sure!

You personally can know the peace and comfort of a personal

relationship with Jesus Christ. You no longer need to fear death

and an eternity separated form a loving God.

“Lord, I confess I am a sinner. I recognize that I can do nothing to save

myself form an eternity in hell. Thank you for dying on the cross for my

sins. I now trust in you (Jesus Christ) to be my personal Savior and Lord

of my life, and hereby commit my life to you for all eternity.”

PLAINFIELD — A new light has come to the city.

The light is set to shine on women — and men — in crisis.

Gateway Pregnancy Centers, a nonprofit crisis pregnancy Christian ministry that provides all of its services free of charge and in strict confidence, has opened an office in the city.

Gateway offers pregnancy tests, peer counseling, chastity counseling, post-abortion counseling, husband/boyfriend counseling, sonograms for pregnancy verification, education, emotional and spiritual support and material help (by providing baby items).

With two other locations in Elizabeth (since 1985) and in Irvington (since 1991), Gateway's mission is "sharing Christ with women in crisis pregnancy."

"We are a Christian ministry but we do not turn anyone away," said the Rev. Dean Gavaris, Executive director of Gateway, who is in charge of day-to-day operations at the three centers.

Gavaris is a resident of Union (Union County). He attended Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y., and holds an associate's degree in business administration from Nassau Community College, Garden City, N.Y. He is a graduate of Northeastern Bible College, Essex Fells, with a bachelor of arts in biblical literature. He was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1993 at Clinton Hill Baptist Church, (now Crossroads Christian Fellowship) in Union.

"What we are doing is social work — but from a Christian model," Gavaris said. "We are big on making it factual. When a young woman doesn't know what's going on, we provide her with the proper information.

"We wanted to open a center in Plainfield for some time," he continued. "There is no pregnancy center around here who takes people in off the street."

The local center, which opened the second week of February, is at Park Avenue and 7th Street. It is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. No appointment is necessary.

Directing the local office is the Rev. Dorothy Booker, a volunteer who believes this ministry is critical.

Booker, who worked for more that 30 years at Verizon, retired after 15 years as a senior service analyst.

She has Christian training at Zarephath Christian College and was ordained a minister in 1995 through the Christian Unity Church. She served as a youth minister at Christ Memorial Baptist Church here.

"I see the hand of God leading me in this ministry," Booker said. "I believe we are making a difference. We are telling people the truth, talking to teenagers about their choices — the goal is to present the gospel."

The Gateway ministry has changed lives. In fact, some clients have returned to the ministry as volunteers and to give witness.

Sharon V. Williams, who has given counseling at Gateway, tells the story of how she came into the ministry.

"I went to Gateway ministry to receive help with the awful guilt I suffered following an abortion," Williams said. "My abortion was a result of disobedience to God's word, the insistence of my minister boyfriend, my own pride and fear of others' opinions. Gateway Pregnancy Center was there to help me become reunited with God's forgiving arms, provided emotional and spiritual support to help me heal.

"Soon after, I became a counselor at Gateway and encouraged other young women to rethink their desperate decision and choose life. I was able to witness to youth about chastity (abstaining from sex and keeping your self respect) and I worked with a support group for those who experienced abortion. ... It made a profound difference in my life and many others."

Booker said that many "children" are engaging in sexual intercourse, creating crisis pregnancies. She added that in the local office, a great percentage of the clients are Hispanic. Gateway provides materials in Spanish and French as well as English.

Resources for the Gateway centers are provided by donations and fund-raising events.

A fund-raising walk-a-thon is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 31 at Cedar Brook Park, Plainfield.

The centers have a supporters' banquet, baby-bottle fund-raisers — in which individuals fill a bottle with coins and bills to donate to the centers — and also accept donations from supporting churches and ministries.

To be sure, the network of supporting ministries is important to the Gateway mission.

"Gateway Pregnancy Centers have been of great encouragement to many as well as us here at Comforting Hearts Ministries," said John C. MacIver, executive director of Comforting Hearts in Avenel. "We believe their work to be of the utmost importance and we support them fully. Thank God for Gateway."
