Helen Sobchak (1918-2016)
Helen served 16 years in our Irvington clothing room from 1995 through 2011
She began her service with Gateway at age 77 and concluded at age 93
Funeral Arrangements:
Visitation will be held in Liberty Church, 953 West Chestnut Street, Union (www.libetychurchnj) on Sunday, July 24th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. (evening only) and Monday morning, July 25th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m.
Interment to follow in Hollywood Cemetery, 1621 Stuyvesant Avenue,
Union. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations in Helen’s
Memory to Gateway Pregnancy Centers (www.gateway.org), 960 Springfield Avenue, Irvington, N.J.07111

Helen’s obituary:
Helen W. (nee Grabowa) Sobchak of Maplewood, N.J. passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the age of 98,
Helen was born and raised in Newark where she had resided prior to
moving to Maplewood in 1965. She was a clerk for the Maplewood Motor
Vehicles Violation Bureau for 5 years before retiring 22 years ago.
Helen was very active in various ministries at Liberty Church, Union (formerly Evangel Baptist Church) where she also taught Sunday School.
She was a Cubbie Leader for Awanna Kids and a volunteer for Gateway Pregnancy Centers.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Anthony Sobchak. She is survived by
her daughter, Elizabeth Casciano & her husband Nicholas;
grandchildren: Christopher and Mari Woodford, Joanna and Matthew Engles;
and great-grandchildren, Lilly and J.J. Engles and Cody Woodford.
We also remember that…
She completed the whole curriculum of Bible Studies Fellowship
She liked the traditional hymns
She took two trips with Evangel Church to Israel and
the Travels of Paul: Turkey Greece and Rome.
She loved going to the Maplewood Community Pool and
watching Judge Judy and Antiques Roadshow
She wrote lots of Christian poetry and did some watercolor painting.
She taught Sunday School and was an Awanna leader for the
youngest group - the Cubbies for 16 years
She also volunteered for the Hemmingway's VBS in Newark
and in the former Service League Thrift Shop in Maplewood
(she loved having first picks).
She was involved in the Maplewood Senior Citizens group
and was president for a year or 2.
