HI EVERYONE,

WOULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR MY UNCLE, RUDY SEGER? HE HAS BEEN A DIABETIC FOR
YEARS AND LATELY HIS ILLNESS IS PROGRESSING. HE HAD SOME BLOOD WORK DONE
LAST WEEK WHICH REVEALS KIDNEY AND LIVER DAMAGE. HIS DOCTOR WANTS TO TRY A
NEW MEDICATION, BUT SAID IF THINGS DON'T TURN AROUND HE COULD BE ON DIALYSIS
IN A YEAR. IN ADDITION, HE WENT TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM YESTERSAY BECAUSE HE
WAS FEELING VERY SICK AND NOT EATING, AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PNEUMONIA AND
SLIGHT DEHYDRATION. HE WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT FORTUNATELY THE
PNEUMONIA WAS CAUGHT IN ITS EARLY STAGES.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, AND HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR!

The New Civil Rights Movement

Every single day in this country, according to statistics provided by the abortion industry, approximately 1,452 African-American fetuses will be aborted. Planned Parenthood operates the nation's largest chain of abortion clinics and almost 80% of its facilities are located in minority neighborhoods. While the majority of their clients are poor, vulnerable, minority women, the clinics themselves reap huge profits from both performing the abortions and selling the fetal body parts. According to The Alan Guttmacher Institute, a group associated with Planned Parenthood, in 1985 blacks made up 12% of the population of the United States, yet accounted for over 33% of the abortions. Trends would indicate this percentage has grown even larger.

At any good library you can find the writings and correspondence of Margaret Sanger, founder of what is today Planned Parenthood, and read about Sangers plans for the Negro Projecta project which anticipated the reduction of African-Americans by placing abortion clinics in their communities, because, in Sangers own words, they breed carelessly and disastrously. (Recent editions of Sangers works have been edited to remove much of the racist content, but older editions can still be found with some persistence.) In April of 1933, Sanger's Birth Control Review published "Eugenic Sterilization: An Urgent Need," by Ernst Rudin, Hitler's director of genetic sterilization and director of the Nazi Medical Experimentation Program. Rubin was also the founding father of the Nazi Society for Racial Hygiene. Rudin was Sanger's friend, and she retained him as an advisor.

Every three days, more African-Americans are killed by abortion than have been killed by the Ku Klux Klan in its entire history supposedly in the name of compassion and choice. In reality, genocide might be a more appropriate name. If we use the abortion industrys own figure of 1,452 abortions of black fetuses per day as an average, then well over 14 million African-Americans have been legally and efficiently slaughtered in abortion clinics in the three decades since the Supreme Courts ruling in Roe vs. Wade. Thats more than twice the number of people murdered in Nazi death camps. The number gets exponentially larger when you take into account all of the potential African-American descendants of these aborted babies. Since 1973, abortion has effectively reduced the black population by over 25 percent.

See: www.blackgenocide.org

There is a growing African-American Pro-Life voice in this country and persons of all races are marching and speaking out as part of this new civil rights movement. Only in an unethical culture of death could the poor and disadvantaged, from all races, be encouraged by their schools, their government, and their doctors that the means to a higher quality of life includes killing their own childrentheir future and their hope.

Also from Cathy Horling:

"I do have a prayer request. A man that Tony had business with this week
in Texas, has a son that is very ill. I guess he was born 16 weeks ago,
with Down Syndrome, and if that was not enough, he has a hole in his heart
that is 65% of his heart.

He is scheduled for Heart Surgery on Dec 10th.
Just please pray for this family, and this tiny baby.

Their last name is Hanlan, and the baby's name is Zach.
Thank you so much."

Praise and Prayer from Gateway's accuntant, Cathy Horling!

HI,

A FEW MONTHS AGO I ASKED FOR PRAYER FOR OUR FORMER RECEPTIONIST'S SISTER
ROSE, WHO WAS RIDDEN WITH CANCEROUS TUMORS THAT WERE SO NUMEROUS THAT THE
SURGEON JUST CLOSED HER UP AND GAVE HER VIRTUALLY NO HOPE. SHE HAS BEEN
TREATED WITH CHEMOTHERAPY AND I AM ELATED TO TELL YOU THAT SHE NOW FEELS
GREAT, IS TRAVELING AROUND, AND THE TUMORS ARE SO SMALL THE DOCTORS CAN
HARDLY SEE THEM!
WE KNOW IT IS THE LORD'S HEALING TOUCH AND HIS ANSWER TO MANY PRAYERS THAT
MADE THIS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR PRAYERS!

I HAVE ANOTHER PRAYER REQUEST: A MINISTER AND HIS WIFE, HARRY AND DOTTIE
NICHOLS, NEED THE LORD'S HEALING TOUCH AS WELL. THEY HAVE FAITHFULLY SERVED
THE LORD IN A PRISON MINISTRY FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN
CHANGING THE LIVES OF MANY DURING THIS TIME. HARRY, WHO IS ABOUT 80, HAD A
SEVERE HEART ATTACK IN SEPTEMBER AND IS NOW ON DIALYSIS AND IS BEDRIDDEN,
AMONGST OTHER HEALTH ISSUES. HIS WIFE IS TRYING TO TAKE CARE OF HIM BUT IS
IN POOR HEALTH HERSELF. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE LORD'S HEALING HAND TO BE UPON
THEM. THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!

GOD BLESS YOU,
CATHY

Akua Furlow, Executive Director L.E.A.R.N. (the Life Education and Resource Network) writes from Texas:

"Greetings, I am writing to ask you to pray for my brother-in-law, Michael Furlow who had surgery for a brain tumor on Wednesday. The tumor was removed and it was malignant. The doctors do not have a good prognosis, but we know The Great Physician and so I ask you to place Michael's name on your various prayer lists.

His brain is still very swollen and he has little movement on his left side. There was some concern last night that he may have a blood clot in his left leg.

Thank you for your love concern and prayers, Akua Furlow"

Update on Grover Willcox

To All Our Loved Ones, We praise God for he has heard your prayers and Dad has improved considerably. Today his mouth is almost back to normal, his speech is discernable and he's identifying people as they enter his hospital room.
The doctor identified 2 clots (forehead and left side) and has Dad on blood thinners. Monday the therapist will come to assist Dad so he can leave the hospital but until then he remains bedridden and on IV drip.
We are very thankful that his improvement today is most likely an indication of full recovery. Thank God but also keep Dad & Mom in your prayers. Thank you all, Grover A

"A note from the family of Grover Willcox in Uganda"
Friday, October 15, 2004 5:22 PM

To All Our Loved Ones,
Today Dad (Grover, senior) suffered a stroke. The initial manifestations left him with slurred speech, facial distortion and unable to walk. At present, midnight Uganda time, he is in the International Hospital in Kampala where he'll get quality care. He's receiving IV drugs and tomorrow the doctors will be able to ascertain his condition much better.
In the meantime -- all of us want you to lift him up to our Lord in prayer. God is the one who numbers our days and has had Dad in the palm of His hand for many decades. The Word also says, "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man (or woman) availeth much" so just pray. We will send further updates as soon as we're possible. Blessings to you all, Grover A

An update on our brother in Christ, Geoff Jones

Hi Everyone,

Geoff has been moved to hopefully his LAST facility before he comes home. Hartwyck in Edison. The visiting hours are pretty much the same, the room is smaller. Geoff is trying to acclamate himself to his new surroundingstrying to get to know the new nurses, etc

One prayer concern I have right now is that this facility is motivated to help Geoff get back to his regular routine, going back to work, playing guitar, etc. Theres such a fine line between sub-acute facility and nursing home. Even though Geof is in the Brain Trauma Extended Recovery Unit, I want them to always remember that hes not staying. One thing I can say is that Geoff is actually much better off than some of the patients Ive seen so far.

A few other matters to pray for:

1) His right foot isnt completely healed yet, please continue to pray for total healing

2) Geoff still has the trach tube because hes coughing up secretions, please pray complete clearing of the lungs so that tube can be removed.

3) Pray that Geoff continues to tolerate the small amount of pureed food that eating during therapy. If so, then they will take out his feeding tube and he can start eating more real food.

4) Probably whats almost as important as any of these is that his vocal chords need to become much stronger so we can hear him better, so he can tell us whats wrong, whats right, what-ever.

Geoff and I cant thank all of you enough for your constant support and encouragement. Love you Lots!

Blessings

A note to Gateway from Tyamba's mom:

"Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you and your organization once again for your prayers. As Tyamba remains missing, the pain for me has intensified.

I have been in touch with KISS FM online Sunday morning program with Bob Slade. They were broadcasting a program with Bill Cosby regarding violence. I got through and they offered to help. Hopefully, I can gain more attention to the issue not just for Tyamba's sake but for the sake of others whose children may be contemplating running away.

I will remain in touch with you. I am forever greatful for all that you do."

Urgent prayer request!

Hannah, the baby who the doctors said was born with a brain stem, but no brain, is having multiple seizures. Obviously she does have a brain, but she is in critical condition.

Her parents no sooner brought her back home again from the hospital that they had to rush her back.

For those of you who don't know the story: Hannah's parents were pressured by the doctors to abort her, but they are believers and refused to murder their unborn child. Hannah is several months old, but is a very sick little baby. She does have brain function, but the seizures are rough on her. This whole thing has been a real walk of faith for her parents, as the medical bills mount.

Please pray:
1.) That whatever is causing the seizures will be discovered.
2.) That the right medication to control/heal the seizures...
3.) That the medical bills will be taken care of.

Please bring this prayer request before your churches, cell groups, and with prayer partners. Baby Hannah needs all the prayer she can get. Pray Psalm 118:17 for Hannah, that she will not die, but live and testify to the glorious works of the Lord...AMEN? I am believing that Hannah will be a walking, talking miracle. She already is, but she was not expected to even be born alive.

The Lord bless you all,
Claire

Gateway Pregnancy Centers

GREETINGS TO ALL!

SOME TIME AGO I REQUESTED PRAYER FOR PAUL KIM, A YOUNG MAN WITH DOWN'S
SYNDROME WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM SEVERAL FORMS OF CANCER. HE WAS IN THE
HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT FOR A LONG TIME AND I AM ELATED TO TELL YOU THAT HE
IS DOING VERY WELL - EVEN BOWLING AND PLAYING GOLF! ALL THE GLORY GOES TO
THE LORD BECAUSE THE DOCTORS HADN'T GIVEN HIM MUCH HOPE AT ALL! THANK YOU SO
MUCH FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND THANK YOU LORD!

COULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR THE FOLLOWING?

1) MY BROTHER-IN-LAW, TOM. HE NOW HAS SOME SCARRING ON HIS LIVER WHICH MEANS
THAT HIS HEPATITIS C IS PROGRESSING. THE DOCTORS ARE ADVISING HIM TO TRY
ANOTHER MEDICATION (THE LAST ONE HAD NO EFFECT) WHICH HAS SIMILAR SIDE
EFFECTS TO CHEMOTHERAPY. IN ADDITION, HE IS LOSING HIS JOB AS OF SEPT. 17.
WE ALL KNOW THAT WITH THE LORD ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD AND WE KNOW
HE'LL COME THROUGH IN THIS SITUATION!

2) THE FATHER OF ONE OF MY CO-WORKERS, WHO WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE
CANCER. IT WAS FOUND EARLY AND WE'RE BELIEVING THAT THE LORD WILL HEAL HIM,
AS HE HAS KEPT THIS MAN'S WIFE FREE OF BREAST CANCER FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

3) THE STEPDAUGHTER OF ANOTHER CO-WORKER, WHO WAS RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH
BREAST CANCER. SHE IS ONLY 31 AND HAD A MASECTOMY LAST WEEK. THIS AFFLICTED
WOMAN'S MOTHER DID OF LEUKEMIA WHEN SHE WAS ONLY 34.

NOTHING IS TOO DIFFICULT FOR THE LORD, AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR
FAITHFULNESS AND PRAYERS!

GOD BLESS,
CATHY

Praise Reports -

1. Currently Geoff is off all antibiotics! The doctor says that
the infections in his blood are under control, so he's discontinued the
meds.
2. His blood clots in his legs have dissipated! The movement from
therapy is really helping. Geoff was on at least 2 blood thinners for
the clots, now hes down to one for maintenance purposes
3. One of the best praise reports is that I found out that Geoffs
head doctor is a BELIEVER!!!! This is such a blessing, because this means
that he understands that All Things Are Possible With God!
4. Geoff is getting fed through the feeding tube again and seems to
be tolerating it. Hes only been getting about a 30ccs (about a shot
glass worth) of medical milkshake every 6 hours, but they just up it to
50 ccs every 4 hours and hes still getting nutrients through his PIC
line (artery IV line)
5. Yesterday, I brought in one of Geoffs guitars and handed it to
him he took it and went right into position! J He tried to play but his
right hand is still a little painful and still too weak to strum, BUT I
asked him to teach me to play, and he started instructing me, telling
me what open strings are and what not

More than likely, restricted visitation will be lifted when Geoff gets
transferred to a sub-acute facility, which looks to be happening soon. In
the mean time please continue to pray for him:

1. Geoff still has an ulcer on the heel of his right foot,
hindering total physical therapy

we need complete and fast healing of that.

2. Linked to the ulcer is a possibility of arterial disease, Im
not sure why and need to find out more, however join me in prayer in
rebuking that and any further complications in Jesus name

3. The sooner his abdomen fully tolerates getting fed through the
feeding tube, the sooner his PIC line will be removed thus eliminating
another possible entry for infection. The less openings to his blood
stream the better. Also please keep praying that his colon continues to
speed back to the function of processing his meals at a normal speed,
because then theyll try feeding him by mouth.

4. Last but not least - Insurance, Insurance, Insurance. . Geoff
is at the point where hes going to have to pay for his health insurance
out of pocket (a good $500.00/mth). That can be paid because he is
getting disability however, once he goes to sub-acute and if he has to
stay past 30 days, sub-acute will take all of his disability benefits
but the health insurance will still have to be paid along with his other
expenses (rent, auto ins, etc) Basically the faster Geoff recovers and
is back to work the less well lose financially. Im signing Geoff up for
every benefit possible (Soc Sec, Medicaid, Va Benefits, etc), but of
course the best resolution is a speedy recovery. So just please keep the
prayers going. God Bless!

Update on Geoff Jones

Geoff is continuing to improve. His mom and I had a meeting with His
doctors and therapists. The primary therapist is please with his
progress and so is his primary doctor. Praise God, they didnt have to
cut his hair to do the EEG test, thank you for your prayers on that.

Current concerns are:
1. The ulcer/severe blister on the heel of his right foot (the bad
hip side) is healing slowly. The quicker it heals, the quicker his
therapy can really take off. If any of you are in the medical profession
and there are some medications that you seen work on this type of wound
please let me know

2. His right hand is healing, they are changing the splint on it
every week, please keep it in prayer.

3. Geoff has an infection in his blood, and has been getting
antibiotics for the past 1 weeks, please pray that it doesnt linger
and that he get no more infections

4. Please pray for his blood clots in his legs to dissipate and not
travel as well as not form any more. There is also a clot in his lungs
that slipped past his filter

5. Pray that his colon starts functioning normally again

6. And the sooner his lungs improve and clear, the sooner his trach
tube can be removed
Just looking toward the future, Geoff had diabetes and high blood
pressure, coupled with his current condition, he is at risk of getting
strokes in the future.
Please join me in prayer as we REBUKE that in
Jesus name!
Geoff is still on restricted visitation but all of you prayer are
reaching the Our Father and hes answering them! God bless!

LATE-BREAKING NEWS NOTORIOUS
ABORTION MILL SUES LEGAL CENTER!

On Tuesday, July 27, 2004, the Legal Center for Defense of Life learned that it has been sued by Metropolitan Medical Associates, the Englewood abortion mill notorious for admitting to performing 1,500 partial-birth abortions a year in addition to countless other abortions.

The Englewood clinic attracts women from New York City and the entire New York-New Jersey metropolitan region, many of whom are referred for late-term abortions that other abortionists are unable or unwilling to handle.

For over 30 years, dedicated pro-life demonstrators and sidewalk counselors have assembled outside the gruesome Englewood facility, praying for an end to this holocaust and hoping to persuade the expectant mothers to change their minds and hearts. By the grace of God, the pro-lifers are sometimes successful in turning women away from Metropolitans front door. This hurts the abortion mills highly lucrative business, and Metropolitan is upset about it.

As a result, Metropolitan filed suit in the Superior Court of New Jersey, demanding that the Court impose a buffer zone around the abortion facility, to keep the pro-lifers across the street, where they cannot talk to patients or to hand leaflets to them. But instead of suing the pro-lifers who appear outside its doors on a daily basis, Metropolitan has sued the Legal Center, falsely claiming that the Legal Center is responsible for organizing protests outside the abortion mill.

The truth is that the Legal Center has been representing pro-lifers in successful battles against Metropolitan for many years. In 1997, Legal Center attorneys defeated criminal prosecutions against pro-lifers charged with violating a 1974 court order requiring protests to be conducted across the street. The court order was declared null and void, which allowed pro-lifers to counsel and demonstrate immediately in front of the mill, where they are better able to reach the women going inside.

In 1998, in a case that eventually went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, Executive Director Ed Gilhooly and a team of Legal Center volunteers defeated the full might of the U.S. Department of Justice, which tried to convince a federal judge to impose a 60-foot buffer zone around Metropolitan, based on the infamous Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. In 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2003, the Legal Center wrote letters to Englewood officials on behalf of pro-lifers who demonstrate outside of Metropolitans clinic.

More recently, and still pending, is the Legal Centers medical malpractice lawsuit against Metropolitan, on behalf of a woman who was injured during an abortion there.

While Metropolitan has ample reason to be frustrated and upset with the work of the Legal Center over the years, it has no basis whatsoever for a lawsuit against the Legal Center.
Therefore, our President, Rich Collier http://www.gateway.org/content/pdf/Richard%20Collier.jpghas already filed over 60 pages of briefs and affidavits opposing Metropolitans demand for an emergency injunction that would force pro-lifers back across the street.
The Court is expected to rule on this demand on August 6.
We ask for your prayers and continued support of the Legal Center as it faces this latest trial.

Proclamation 5761 --
National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 1988
January 14, 1988

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

America has given a great gift to the world, a gift that drew upon the accumulated wisdom derived from centuries of experiments in self-government, a gift that has irrevocably changed humanity's future. Our gift is twofold: the declaration, as a cardinal principle of all just law, of the God-given, unalienable rights possessed by every human being; and the example of our determination to secure those rights and to defend them against every challenge through the generations. Our declaration and defense of our rights have made us and kept us free and have sent a tide of hope and inspiration around the globe.

One of those unalienable rights, as the Declaration of Independence affirms so eloquently, is the right to life. In the 15 years since the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, however, America's unborn have been denied their right to life. Among the tragic and unspeakable results in the past decade and a half have been the loss of life of 22 million infants before birth; the pressure and anguish of countless women and girls who are driven to abortion; and a cheapening of our respect for the human person and the sanctity of human life.

We are told that we may not interfere with abortion. We are told that we may not ``impose our morality'' on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth; yet no one calls it ``imposing morality'' to prohibit the taking of life after people are born. We are told as well that there exists a ``right'' to end the lives of unborn children; yet no one can explain how such a right can exist in stark contradiction of each person's fundamental right to life.

That right to life belongs equally to babies in the womb, babies born handicapped, and the elderly or infirm. That we have killed the unborn for 15 years does not nullify this right, nor could any number of killings ever do so. The unalienable right to life is found not only in the Declaration of Independence but also in the Constitution that every President is sworn to preserve, protect, and defend. Both the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.

All medical and scientific evidence increasingly affirms that children before birth share all the basic attributes of human personality--that they in fact are persons. Modern medicine treats unborn children as patients. Yet, as the Supreme Court itself has noted, the decision in Roe v. Wade rested upon an earlier state of medical technology. The law of the land in 1988 should recognize all of the medical evidence.

Our Nation cannot continue down the path of abortion, so radically at odds with our history, our heritage, and our concepts of justice. This sacred legacy, and the well-being and the future of our country, demand that protection of the innocents must be guaranteed and that the personhood of the unborn be declared and defended throughout our land. In legislation introduced at my request in the First Session of the 100th Congress, I have asked the Legislative branch to declare the ``humanity of the unborn child and the compelling interest of the several states to protect the life of each person before birth.'' This duty to declare on so fundamental a matter falls to the Executive as well. By this Proclamation I hereby do so.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim and declare the unalienable personhood of every American, from the moment of conception until natural death, and I do proclaim, ordain, and declare that I will take care that the Constitution and laws of the United States are faithfully executed for the protection of America's unborn children. Upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favor of Almighty God. I also proclaim Sunday, January 17, 1988, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I call upon the citizens of this blessed land to gather on that day in their homes and places of worship to give thanks for the gift of life they enjoy and to reaffirm their commitment to the dignity of every human being and the sanctity of every human life.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this fourteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twelfth.

Gateway's CPC requests prayer:

COULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR ONE OF MY BOSSES, JOHN ANGLIM? HE RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT HE HAS PROSTATE CANCER. IT IS IN THE EARLY STAGES AND THE DOCTORS ARE OPTIMISTIC, BUT HE IS TRYING TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHETHER TO HAVE SURGERY OR RADIATION AND SEED IMPLANTS.

HE IS ONLY 57, SO HE IS A LITTLE YOUNG FOR THE SEEDS, BUT THE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS ARE IRREVERSIBLE. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE LORD'S DIRECTION AND A COMPLETE HEALING FOR HIM. HE ALSO HAD AN
ENDOSCOPY BECAUSE SOME STRANGELY-COLORED CELLS WERE FOUND IN HIS ESOPHAGUS, AND HE WILL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THAT NEXT WEEK. PLEASE PRAY THAT NOTHING MALIGNANT IS FOUND.

YOU MIGHT RECALL THAT I HAD ASKED FOR PRAYER FOR HIS WIFE MAUREEN, WHO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER, LAST YEAR. SHE IS DOING VERY WELL, PRAISE THE LORD!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS. THE ANGLIMS BELIEVE THAT THE PRAYERS WORKED FOR MAUREEN, AND WE'RE BELIEVING THE SAME FOR JOHN.

GOD BLESS! CATHY

Stanley K. Henshaw, a senior fellow at Alan Guttmacher institute, attributed the increase in black women's abortions to the withdrawal of Norplant, a contraceptive implant, after lawsuits resulted from its use. Henshaw said Norplant was popular with black teenage women who had one child, a group also more likely to end a pregnancy through abortion. (NY Times, 02/20/04.)

N.J. Set to Fund Stem Cell Research
Sat Feb 21, 5:05 PM ET

TRENTON - New Jersey is poised to become the first state in the nation to finance stem cell research.

Gov. James E. McGreevey will announce in his budget address Tuesday that the state will provide $6.5 million for a stem cell research institute, The New York Times reported in Saturday's editions.

Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey will run the institute, which will be based in New Brunswick.

McGreevey wants to spend $50 million over the next five years for research on human embryonic stem cells.

Wise Young, chairman of cell biology and neuroscience at Rutgers, said the hope is to recruit about a dozen of "the best stem cell scientists in the world."

Last month, the governor signed legislation making New Jersey the second state behind California to support stem cell research. In California, a ballot initiative is being proposed that would raise $3 billion over 10 years for stem cell research.

Stem cells are found in human embryos, umbilical cords and placentas, and help create the human body. Scientists hope to someday direct stem cells to grow in laboratories into replacement organs and tissues to treat a wide range of diseases.

But to harvest stem cells, researchers must destroy days-old embryos a procedure condemned by the Roman Catholic Church, abortion foes and others.

President Bush (news - web sites), citing ethical considerations, has limited federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to existing lines of cells. But many stem cell scientists say the policy severely restricts research that ultimately could benefit millions of patients.

Gregg and Lois Cunningham of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform request prayer for their upcoming campaigns:

"Our current prayer need is for the launch of our Key States Project. Our Reproductive "Choice" Campaign trucks and plane are amassing in Florida as we speak and the project wil begin Monday, Feb. 16. Of course, Satan is on the attack, so we'd appreciate your prayers for victory as we take the visual truth about abortion to states where they are key senatorial (and presidential) elections taking place this year."

One of Gateways volunteer counselors is having a biopsy on Thursday morning, February 12th. The prayer is that cancer will not have reoccurred. Please pray for her.

Something to think about...

"Jesus measures our heart by the words we say (Matthew 12:34), the thoughts we think (Mark 7:21), the things we look at (Matthew 6:22-23), the things we treasure (Matthew 6:21) and the things upon which we set our affections (I John 2:15)." Joe White, Promise Keeper

Letter to the editor of January 28, 2004 to The Tower @ Kean University, Union, New Jersey

Please come down from the Tower ..
woman need the truth!

(An open letter to The Tower, the school newspaper of Kean University,
in response to the editorial by Laura Dembinski}

January 28, 2004

Dear Ms. Dembinski,

In response to you recent editorial, you began by comparing the views of so-called anti-abortionists with your view. You stated Anti-abortionists see partial-birth abortions as an inhuman and grotesque act of slaughter. But what the ban does is even worse: it places women who may need the procedure in grave danger.

May I respectfully argue (1) an inhuman, grotesque act of slaughter is exactly how to describe this procedure (2) Although nothing should ever be compared as even worse, your personal view that this places women in danger is totally false.

Women dont need to be told that a partial birth abortion will save their life. Aborting a baby will in no way extend the life of the mother, nor will it help to cure her; to the contrary, a serious medical procedure on an already ill person increases the chances of injury or death.

With this said, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban would allow use of the procedure if necessary to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, physical illness, or physical injury, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.

Your description itself should horrify any women even thinking about such a procedure. No mention was made in your editorial of the serious injuries that a second or third trimester abortion can have on the mother herself.

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has said that no competent physician with state-of-the art skill in the management of high-risk pregnancies needs to perform a partial birth abortion. http://www.youdebate.com/deabates/abortionpartial.htm

Your support of this procedure indicates either ignorance of this, or an
acceptance that those who do these abortions lack the skills to adequately
treat the mother and the child as separate patients.

AMA Executive Vice President P. John Seward, M.D., has written this in support of such a ban: Thank you for the opportunity to work with you towards restricting a procedure we all agree is not good medicine. {May 1997, letter to Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.)}
Heres one of the myths (in your own words), which help to promote ignorance on this issue Bush has put the lives and health of women in jeopardy.

This isnt about President Bush. This is NOT about the safety of women.. If the woman's life were really in danger, then a Partial Birth Abortion would kill her, if she survives the Partial Birth Abortion, then her life was never in danger. There are other procedures that they can do instead of the Partial Birth. There is no doctor or any other medical expert says that the Partial Birth is necessary for survival. If there would be a problem in the pregnancy, then it would have been noticed in the 3rd or 4th month, maybe 5th month at the latest. www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm361662.html

This isnt about Republicans or Democrats. In a letter on April 22, 1997, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (Democrat-South Dakota) wrote, "Abortion is wrong. We, as a society, should do everything we can to prevent it." Sen. Daschle actually changed his vote in May 1997, and voted for the bill banning partial-birth abortion.

Several usually pro-abortion SenatorsDaniel Patrick Moynihan (D-New York), Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia) and Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) and RepresentativesDavid Bonior (D-Michigan), Richard Gephardt (D-Missouri) and Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio)have voted for the ban in the past. http://www.rantweb.com/pba.html Politicians know the truth!

In a recent Gallup poll, 71 percent of respondents said they favored a ban on partial-birth abortions, except to save the mothers life. The average American knows the truth!

Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion advocate in the United States, in a 1965 pamphlet called "Plan Your Children" said this: "Is [family planning] abortion? Definitely not. An abortion kills the life of a baby after it has begun. It is dangerous to your life and health. It may make you sterile so that when you want a child, you cannot have it." http://www.rantweb.com/pba.html Abortion providers know the truth!
A leading pro-choice apologist has said this: "In the vast majority of cases, the procedure is performed on a healthy mother with a healthy fetus that is 20 weeks or more along. The abortion-rights folks know it, the anti-abortion folks know it, and so, probably, does everyone else." {Ron Fitzsimmons Executive Director for the National Coalition of Abortion Providers The New York Times, February 26, 1997} Pro-choice advocates know the truth!
This is about women

q Doesnt the women know that her baby feels pain during this barbaric procedure? She certainly does. At the 19-20 week stage of development when partial-birth abortions are performed, the baby may feel pain even more intensely because the brain has not yet developed the capabilities for blocking pain. {Congress, Senate, Joint Hearing Before the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Constitution Subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Partial-birth Abortion Ban Act: Testimony of Douglas Johnson, Legislative Director for the National Right to Life Committee, 105th Cong., 1st sess., 11 March 1997.}
q Dont abortionists know? They certainly do.

o Dr. Martin Haskell, one of the creators of the procedure, who told the AMA News in 1993 that he had performed more than 1,000 partial-birth abortions said this Ill be quite frank; most of my abortions are elective in that 20-24 week range .. In my particular case, probably 20% are for genetic reasons. And the other 80% performed are purely elective.

o The same action taken on the same baby at the same stage of development would be felony infanticide if the child moved a mere three inches further down the birth canal. {Partial-Birth Abortion Is Not About Abortion: Gregory Koukl: http://www.str.org/free/commentaries/abortion/notabout.htm

This may be about race

In New Jersey, abortions by African Americans outnumber those by Caucasians five to one. In New Jersey, 80% of all partial birth abortions take place upon the bodies of African American women. 40% of all PBAs take place in New Jersey. Could it be argued that this procedure is black genocide?

"There are those who argue that the right to privacy is of [a] higher order than the right to life ... that was the premise of slavery. You could not protest the existence or treatment of slaves on the plantation because that was private and therefore outside your right to be concerned.

"What happens to the mind of a person, and the moral fabric of a nation, that accepts the aborting of the life of a baby without a pang of conscience? What kind of a person and what kind of a society will we have 20 years hence if life can be taken so casually? It is that question, the question of our attitude, our value system, and our mind-set with regard to the nature and worth of life itself that is the central question confronting mankind. Failure to answer that question affirmatively may leave us with a hell right here on earth." Jesse Jackson - 1977 National Right to Life News

I help direct a womens center that has seen in the past 18 years, over 17,000 women in the Essex and Union county areas alone. These women are mostly teens or in their early twenties. Many have been lied to about the true nature of the abortion procedure. I implore you to share the facts, not the political rhetoric. Yes, they are in grave danger the danger of knowing the truth too late. Please, tell the truth.

Respectfully,

Rev. Dean Gavaris, Executive Director
Gateway Pregnancy Center, Irvington and Elizabeth, NJ

Prayer request from our brother Andrew Manns:

Dear Prayer Warriors:
I received this prayer request from a dear friend that lives in the community and is a neighbor of the family below. Too often we think our own personal challenges are unbearable. Then we hear about families facing real obstacles they must overcome. It is times like these that we should be thankful for what we do have. Please pray for this family. Thank you.
Andrew

We know a lovely family in Fanwood who is dealing with a hardship. They have 3 daughters (2 in college, 1 high school freshman with Asperger's
Syndrome). At 57, the dad was downsized from his job 3 yrs. ago, found another job and was downsized again. He had been working temp jobs and this past June, they found he had a brain tumor. Just when they were dealing with that news, they found the source of the cancer was in the lungs and it had spread. Since June they have treated 2 tumors in the brain. Now they are focusing on the lungs and the new tumors that have appeared on the spine. I have offered to drive the high school student home from school each day to free them of one responsiblity. I don't think there is much more that can be done for Jim and Mary O'Connor at this point other than to offer them our prayers. Please keep Jim and his family in your prayers.

2003 and Irvington, New Jersey

Newark, which always has the largest share of the county's slayings, had 85 killings in 2003, including two on New Year's Eve. The 85 marks an increase from the previous year's total of 68, but it does not stand out in the past decade as one of the most violent years in New Jersey's largest city.

The big jump in the county's homicide rate last year was driven by a wave of violence in Irvington and East Orange, which each had their highest totals since the state began publishing crime statistics in 1967.

Irvington had 27 slayings, compared with 15 in 2002 and six in 1998, according to the prosecutor's office.
