Planned Parenthood issued the following statement in response to the billboard:
“These billboards are offensive and disturbing.

(ed. note) What is offensive is this photo, taken in 1926 in Silver Lake, NJ showing Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood) speaking at a KKK meeting.

New York City billboard names the ‘Most Dangerous Place for an African American’BY THE EDITORS Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:02 EST

NEW YORK, Feb. 22, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - “The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb.” That’s according to a new SoHo board that was placed by the group Life Always about half a mile from one of three New York City Planned Parenthood abortion facilities which jointly reported nearly 17,000 abortions in 2010.

“During Black History Month, we celebrate our history, but our future is in jeopardy as a genocidal plot is carried out through abortion,” said Life Always Board Member Pastor Stephen Broden.

“We have seen the heartbreaking effects of opportunists who happen to be black abortionists perpetrating this atrocity; it’s not just babies who are in danger, it’s also their mothers, and our society at large,” he added.

The campaign launch is designed to raise public awareness of Planned Parenthood’s targeting of minority neighborhoods. It comes just weeks after the city health department’s annual Vital Statistics Report revealed that the abortion rate in the city is 41 percent - nearly twice the national average. The percentage was much higher among black women. Planned Parenthood’s annual report states that they perform 300,000+ abortions annually.

“This campaign highlights the tragedy that abortion is the number one killer since 1973 in the black community and the truth that we must confront in a city with a near 60 percent abortion rate for black women,” said Life Always Board Member Rev. Derek McCoy.

The campaign points to the Website thatsabortion.com which features recent Census and Centers for Disease Control data showing that African Americans constitute about 13 percent of the American population, yet receive 36 percent of abortions.

This billboard is Life Always’ first in the state of New York and kicks off their national campaign.

Controversial Anti-Abortion Billboard Goes Up In SoHoFebruary 23, 2011 11:25 AM - Controversial billboard on Sixth Ave and Watts St (Photo/Juliet Papa)

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A three-story high billboard put up in SoHo Tuesday night is causing quite a stir.

1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa gets reaction from residents in the neighborhood. Listen to what they have to say:

The billboard, located at the corner of Watts Street and Sixth Avenue, reads: “The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb”.

The billboard is part of a national campaign sponsored by the anti-abortion group “Life Always” and hangs about a half-mile from a Planned Parenthood facility on Bleeker Street.

“Life Always” claims Planned Parenthood targets minority neighborhoods and that abortions among African-American women are three times that of the rest of the population.

The city’s public advocate Bill Diblasio calls the billboard “grossly offensive” and wants it removed.

“It’s kind of a big scare tactic, it just doesn’t make sense,” one woman said, adding that a more constructive message could address social issues to reduce abortions.

However, one New Yorker told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa that he doesn’t object to the billboard.

“I think they’re trying to send a message to us African-Americans because we do do a lot of abortions and I think we shouldn’t be doing it,” the man said.
Planned Parenthood issued a statement accusing the creators of “using a divisive message around race to restrict access to medical care.”

In December, the city health department released statistics that showed 39 percent of pregnancies ended with induced termination in 2009. Forty-six percent of all births in the Bronx result in abortions—the highest among the five boroughs, according to the report. Blacks had the highest number of abortions with 40,798 with Hispanics having the second highest at 28,364, according to the report.
